Something I saw on Greg's Facebook

What do you fear?
Important choices are never easy. Would you fight for what you value most? Would you oppose the injustice of a majority? Would you sacrifice yourself for others? The past is not filled with heroes, gods, and villains. It is filled with people like you, for whom these choices were no less difficult, their consequences no less severe, for themselves, and for others.

This is taken from a photograph Greg took at the War museum in Ottawa. It's quite a thought that really struck me. It's a pretty tough question is it not? This is a question that many of us do not have to answer because of the people who have gone before us. Because of the Veterans it is not a question that any of us have to contemplate.

How often we take this freedom for granted. We are so spoiled and many of us don't even realize it. A choice like this we read about in fiction. We discuss it in abstract. We never have to choose.

There are Canadians that do make this choice. They go into war-torn areas of the world in attempt to make things better for us and for others. They are out there doing what they do so that we never have to make the choice that the poster in the war museum puts forth.

Six of those soldiers died today in Afghanistan. I don't know any of them but I know that I owe them a lot and I respect them for the brave choice they made. They gave us all the most precious gift one can give. They gave their lives for a cause bigger than themselves. I cannot imagine anything more unselfish.
